Low Desert Mix

Spectacular annuals and perennials suited to warm southwestern climates. In Los Angeles and other mild-winter areas, sow in fall; in colder winter regions, sow in spring. Rain is a key factor in bloom time. This mix is well suited to low-water gardens once established. Best in full sun with well-drained soil, from sea level to 4,000 feet — and grown as annuals anywhere.

What's in the mix:

• California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) — the classic silky-orange poppy, 6–24" tall, blooms mid-late winter through spring
• Engelmann Daisy (Engelmannia peristenia) — cheerful yellow daisies on 1–3 ft stalks above fuzzy gray-green rosettes, blooms spring into summer
• California Bluebells (Phacelia campanularia) — vivid, deep cobalt-blue bell flowers, low and mounding at 6–20", one of the earliest to bloom
• Mexican Gold Poppy (Eschscholzia californica ssp. mexicana) — a deeper golden-orange cousin of the California poppy, similarly low-growing (6–12")
• Pink Wild Snapdragon / Palmer's Penstemon (Penstemon palmeri) — tall, fragrant spires of pale pink to lavender tubular blooms, 3–6 ft, a hummingbird favorite
• Desert Marigold (Baileya multiradiata) — bright yellow daisy-like flowers over soft woolly gray foliage, mounding 12–24"
• Arroyo Desert Lupine / Succulent Lupine (Lupinus succulentus) — spikes of blue-purple pea-flowers (occasionally pink or white), 1–3 ft
• Showy Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosa) — cup-shaped flowers that open white and fade to soft pink, low-spreading at 8–20"
• Pale Evening Primrose (Oenothera pallida) — similar white-fading-to-pink blooms on a lower, more compact plant, 4–16"
